This is a project-fit recommendation, not a benchmark of model quality, development speed, or engine performance. Unity and Unreal Engine both have official MCP tools. MCP access is not unique to Godot. Unity’s page includes beta terms; Unreal’s documentation notes incomplete functionality and changing APIs.

Why we recommend Godot for starting small

Ownership and predictable engine licensing

Godot uses the MIT license, with no engine seat fee or sales royalty. You can license your game commercially while preserving the required engine notices. AI services, assets, distribution, and porting can still cost money. Read Godot’s license.

Changes you can inspect

GDScript and text-based TSCN scenes make file differences visible and support version control. That is useful for reviewing what an assistant changed and returning to a working version. It does not guarantee correct code or lower token costs. TSCN format documentation.

A practical edit–run–check cycle

Godot’s command-line tools support project runs, script checks, headless operation, and exports. A suitable MCP adds editor or runtime operations. Together, these let you divide development into small changes with observable results. Command-line documentation.

A clear learning route

Use the official demos and Brackeys’ original tutorials to understand a working game before extending it. Godot’s documentation recommends GDScript for beginners. Commercial Godot releases show that the engine can support shipping a game; their success is not evidence that they used AI. Godot FAQ.

The limitations, and what you can do about them

Limitation or riskPractical response
Uneven MCP compatibility and maintenanceChoose one server, record versions, and verify a scene read, saved edit, and project run.
AI code can use the wrong APIGive the assistant version-matched documentation, small tasks, error output, and an explicit success condition.
Tool calls can add time and model costEdit ordinary scripts as files. Use MCP when editor state or runtime feedback helps. Measure your own workload.
Large 3D scenes need performance workPrototype on the target hardware, profile bottlenecks, and use LOD, culling, instancing, or baked lighting where appropriate.
Unity-specific plugins do not transfer as a complete workflowAudit critical dependencies before migrating. An established Unity project may be better off staying in Unity.
Console releases need extra workPlan platform approval, SDK access, and licensed middleware or a porting partner.
Godot 4 C# projects currently cannot export to WebEvaluate GDScript for new web-targeted projects, or choose an engine and language combination that supports your target.

These measures reduce risk; they do not remove every engine trade-off. See the official guidance for 3D optimization, console publishing, and C# platform support.

When Unity or Unreal is the better fit

Prioritize Unity when your team’s skills, game code, and key integrations already work there. Unity Personal is free for eligible users under its revenue and funding threshold; the engine plan and AI service costs are separate decisions. Unity Personal terms.

Evaluate Unreal when high-fidelity 3D and its production tools address a central project requirement. Features such as Lumen come with their own hardware and content considerations. Unreal’s standard game license applies a 5% royalty to lifetime product gross revenue above $1 million, with exclusions and incentive terms. Lumen documentation · Unreal licensing.
